175 VOCAL BOUTIQUE CONCERT: REPORTBACK BY DAMASCENE TAYLOR
Another phenomenal musical event at Wynberg Boys High School, which not only showcased the vocal talents of the current students at the school, but also those Old Boys who had left, and have continued to pursue this art form as a career choice. Furthermore, this concert was also a recognition of not only the work done by Brian Botha in keeping the musical flame burning high, but also of the impact made by Old Boy Keenan Oliphant in carrying on this labour of love.
The evening opened with the Senior Choir singing 'Let there be music', which was followed by a fine rendition of 'Give me a choral medley'. The group performances were completed by the Chamber Choir performing 'Hello Mary Lou', 'Under the Boardwalk' and ending their set with 'Walk like a man'.
The individual vocal performances from the Old Boys which followed, showcased the range of talent available from the classical (Marco Titus doing both Maria and O Sole Mio justice), to the contemporary (Jessie Meintjies and Thandekile Maboee doing a mash-up of John Legend's 'You and I', and the classic 'Til there was you') to jazz (Jesse Julies rendering 'Dindi'), to the original (Glen Hartman performing his original compositions 'On your way' and 'Sunrise'). This set was complemented nicely by Keenan Oliphant and his performance of 'Seeing you there', but especially 'Mr Cellophane'.
Our current crop of High School vocalists were not left behind. The performances by Sean Cheney (Leaning on a Lamp Post), James Dawson (I've grown accustomed to her face), and Daryn van Heerden (Sit Down you're rocking the boat), demonstrated to the audience why they scored so highly in the recent Eisteddfod.
A Grey-scarred Vocal Ensemble (sans their well-known dance routines) were in good form as they performed 'I dreamed a dream', 'The Modern Man', 'Good Acapella' and 'Sh-boom'.
The evening culminated in a combined ensemble performance where the Chamber Choir, joined on stage by an Old Boys Choir, performed 'Do you hear the people sing' accompanied by Brian Botha on piano.
A perfect end to an evening, which not only highlighted the musical talent at Wynberg, but also the lasting musical legacy left by the school.
For photos of the event, please see the Wynberg Music Facebook page.
Looking forward to Founders Week 175 (the week of 22nd - 26th August 2016), of which the undoubted highlight is the 'Old Boys Dinner' on the evening of Thursday 25th August, I need to draw your attention to what I believe is the Cultural Highlight of our 175th year celebrations, namely the combined Wynberg Boys Junior School and Wynberg Boys High School Gala Concert.
Aptly titled From an Acorn to an Oak Tree: A Musical Celebration under the direction of Old Boy Keenan Oliphant, this musical celebration will take place over a 3 night period from the 22nd - 24th August. It aims to take the audience on a musical journey through the History of the Wynberg Boys School in a new and exciting way, aided once again by both current students and Old Boys.
Please diarise, so not to miss this Gala Event during Founders Week, and we will forward ticket and booking details as it becomes known.
On a final note, a request from the Old Boys Union. As a school we take immense pride in not only the achievements of the current crop of Wynberg Men, but also those of the Old Wynbergians.
Please could you forward, if you become aware, of any notable cultural achievements we might have missed, or any performances our Old Boys are giving, or are participating in. This allows us to not only stay informed as to what is happening, but also showcases these activities to the broader Old Boys. Please forward details either to Carol Ramsay cramsay@wbhs.org.za or myself damascene.taylor@warwickwealth.com

GRADE 11 - TWO DAY WORK SHADOW 2016
IF ANY OLD BOYS FEEL THEY WOULD LIKE TO INSPIRE OUR WBHS STUDENTS FOR 2 DAYS IN THE JULY HOLIDAYS, PLEASE EMAIL cramsay@wbhs.org.za, STATING THE LINE OF WORK YOU ARE INVOLVED IN. THANK YOU!
The career development of our students is an exciting, multi-faceted educational and developmental process. It requires the support of a host of people: family, teachers, career councillors and input from organisations in the form of information and, where possible, work experience.
To enable the students at Wynberg Boys’ High School to make more informed decisions, there is a Work Shadow Programme for all Grade11 learners which must be done during the July holidays this year. Work Shadow is a powerful way of learning about the world of work. Essentially, it is a student “keeping in step” with a worker, observing the various tasks performed in his/her job and learning about their role.
